4-H Food Stand Offers Taste of Nostalgia

The Fillmore County Fair kicks off on July 23 this year and before it wraps up on July 27, making a visit to the 4-H Food Stand is a must for a taste of nostalgia and local fare. The food stand is located on the southwest side of the fairgrounds and is attached to the east end of the Commercial Building.

Every year, local farmers and businesses play a key role in assuring the very existence of the iconic food stand. Nearly every morsel that is offered comes straight from local farms or businesses giving the food at the Fillmore County Fair an edge on homemade and healthy goodness. Unlike most other county fairs, the Fillmore County Fair relies on local businesses that support them and locals supporting them in return.

This year, a fair goer favorite returns as Anita Bue bakes fresh pies daily on site. No, this isn’t Baker’s Square, this is just how we do things in Fillmore County! With ingredients donated by Sunshine Foods and love donated by Bue, you can savor one of her creations like strawberry rhubarb, blueberry, fresh apple and triple berry just to name a few. Top it off with freshly made ice cream or homemade whipped topping donated by Big Red Barn, of Chatfield, and you will soon know heaven isn’t too far away!

Anita Brown, Food Stand Manager, says back in the 1970’s 4-H families were required to donate two pies for the stand. Times have certainly changed; food that is made in a non-inspected or non-licensed kitchen is no longer allowed. But that hasn’t stopped the Fillmore County 4-H’ers from holding true to homemade goods, now they are just baked right in the food stand kitchen every day.

New to the fair this year, breakfast specials will be offered Wednesday-Friday. Breakfast is served starting at 7am with a special breakfast buffet offered on Saturday beginning at 9am. These specials will feature all your favorites like biscuits and gravy, egg bakes and more. They’ll include a drink and a cook’s choice side for only $5.

The food stand hours for fryers and grill are 10am-10pm daily, and the menu includes everything from burgers to salads made with vegetables donated by Featherstone Farms. Check for lunch specials, including a new 1980’s throwback platter that will feature the original BBQ recipe from Fillmore County 4-H. What was once thought to be lost is now found and is sure to bring your taste buds back to memory lane. Lun .....
