Kingsland, Fillmore Central, Chatfield above average

In the July 20 issue of the Fillmore County Journal, I dissected the 2009 Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) test scores for mathematics and reading for all six Fillmore County area school districts.

From that information, sorted and filtered, I derived the performance rankings of each school district in the Fillmore County area, organized by grade.

You may recall that the Lanesobro Public School District third-graders finished with 100% proficiency in math and reading, but it was Rushford-Peterson that appeared to finish with the overall highest cumulative scores. They were 5% under the state average for reading, but 18.7% above the state average in the area of mathematics.

Well, now the 2009 MCA science test scores have become available, and that means it's time to apply the same litmus test to determine the pH balance of each school district.

So, which school performed the best in the area of science?

Looking solely at school districts based on their proficiency in the area of science at the high school level, which indicates those students have met or exceeded state standards, Kingsland Public School District came out on top.

• Kingsland Public School District, 70 students tested, average test score 1051.6, 65.7% met or exceeded state standards

• Fillmore Central Public Schools, 51 students tested, average test score 1050.2, 56.7% met or exceeded state standards.

• Chatfield Public Schools, 66 students tested, average test score 1049.2, 56.1% met or exceeded state standards.

• Rushford-Peterson Public Schools, 38 students tested, average test score 1045.9, 42.1% met or exceeded state standards.

• Lanesboro Public School District, 32 students tested, average test score 1046.7, 37.5% met or exceeded state standards.

• Mabel-Canton Public School District, 37 students tested, average test score 1042.3, 18.9% met or exceeded state standards.

For all students across the State of Minnesota, science scores showed strong improvement.

• 45 percent of fifth-graders were proficient in 2009, compared to 39% in 2008.

• About 43 percent of eighth-graders were proficient, compared to 39 percent in 2008.

• About 50% of high school students were proficient, compared to approximately 43 percent in 2008.

• Scores for every ethnic subgroup of students in all grade levels tested (5th, 8th, high school) .....
