Kingsland School Board certified 2010 tax levy

LEVY CERTIFIED

The Kingsland School Board certified the tax levy for 2010 on Tuesday night. The tax levy is $1,867,654.08 which is a 2.04% increase over the current levy of $1,830,372.15. This year, in an effort to save money, there will not need to be a Truth in Taxation Hearing scheduled in December as has been done in years past.

Approval was also given by the board for 12 Students to attend the National FFA Conference in Indianapolis, IN. Rachel Frank has qualified for the Job Interview and as a finalist for the Swine Proficiency area. The other students attending the event will attend workshop sessions as well as serving as courtesy corps members.

There was discussion of fundraisers for 2009-2010 and much of the discussion centered on the post prom party. Initially, it was voiced from parents that it would not be a school activity and the status to change it to a school activity was brought to the board. Board Chair Mitch Lenz said, "My only concern is the audit team, will they give the activity a clean audit?" He was assured that it will work if the group follows all the rules like other groups. The vote was taken and it will be on the approved list, which will be presented to the board in October.

Mike Zimmer updated the board on the status of the old elementary school because winter is coming and something needs to be done with the heating system. He said, "Basically there are two choices: to winterize the building now at a cost of $2,000 or to set up two high efficiency furnaces and use fans to distribute the heat." This option would also require new wiring in addition to the furnaces. Cost on option two is $6,400. It was decided to winterize the building for $2,000.

Zimmer also stated that there has been some interest shown in the adjoining lot. A prospective buyer has come forward and wanting to purchase the lot. Zimmer said that $7,000 would be a fair price which is probably more than they will get from selling the school. There was some talk of listing the building with a commercial realtor.

Board members heard some exciting news from Superintendent Strosahl regarding the breakfast program at the school. Last year, there were 176 students eligible and 35 took part. This year 239 are eligible and 127 students got breakfast. Strosahl was obviously pleased that the efforts to take care of the needs of all students is working.

The staff and many of the students at Kingsland are launchin .....
