Fillmore Central students learning with virtual reality

Thu, Dec 22nd, 2011
Posted in Education

The Fillmore Central School Board approved the final levy for 2012, which was the same as what was proposed this fall. The total levy is $1,621,231.60, which is a 5.54 percent increase from last year.

Superintendent Richard Keith explained that the reason for the increase in property taxes is the changes the state legislature made, getting rid of the Homestead Market Credit and replacing it with a Homestead Market Exclusion. This excludes part of the property value from being taxed. Taxes have to go up in order to cover the money the state was once paying.

Keith also gave the Principal's report for Heath Olstad, who was not present at the meeting. Keith explained that Olstad has recently learned Virtual Reality Education Pathfinders (VREP), and has attended a meeting about it in Rochester. VREP is being used in educational settings to expand their learning through the use of virtual reality and three-dimensional projects.

Keith said it can be used in many areas, including science labs, agriculture, technology, and math. Studies have shown that students learn faster with these models, and retain more information. Five students from Fillmore Central will be attending a two-day training, and will bring what they learn back to the school. The Virtual Reality system and training is $5,000, and can be used by many students.

Staff Changes

The board approved the resignation of Kori McCabe from the daycare. They also approved a maternity leave request from elementary teacher Marit Janssen.

Diane Keith's position went from .5 FTE to 1.0 FTE to take the place of Nancy Byrne when she retires.

Julia Olstad was hired as a long-term substitute for the high school science position that will be available second semester.

Andrea Hellickson and Jaslynn-Jo Kraemer were hired for the daycare.

When Tara Corson returns from maternity leave, she will be part-time, sharing her 3/4 preschool teaching position.

Other Business

The board approved the following items:

•Jackie Whitacre as the One-Act play director

•An open enrollment request from a high school student from Mabel-Canton

•Getting bids to sell the flag pole outside the district office that is no longer being used.

The next meeting will be January 24 at 7pm at the high school, and will be an organizational meeting.
