Singer-songwriter Elisa Korenne will teach students at Rushford-Peterson

Rushford, MN - National touring performer and teaching artist Elisa Korenne will teach the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades at Rushford-Peterson Middle School. From April 12-16, Korenne will offer students her "History in Song" workshop. Students will learn songwriting skills and how to apply them to recording local history in song. At the end of the week, students will perform their original songs for their community. Korenne has received national attention as a performing and recording artist. Singer & Musician Magazine lauded Korenne's debut CD, Favorite as a Top 50 independent release of 2005 along with Aimee Mann's The Forgotten Arm and Tracy Grammar's Flower of Avalon saying "Favorite belongs on anyone's must-play list." Korenne has also been called "one of the best we've ever heard" by online independent music retailer CD Baby.

Formerly of New York City, Korenne moved to New York Mills, MN, in 2007 after spending four weeks as the resident artist at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center. Korenne has been collecting awards from arts funders who admire her unique approach to songwriting, storytelling, and history. Korenne has spent the last few years working on her Ordinarily Unsung project, a song cycle and performance piece documenting the experiences of historical members of the fringe in American history. One result of this project has been the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Commission-sponsored Minnesota's Ordinarily Unsung Concert, which has been touring the state since 2008. Korenne is a songwriter's songwriter: her intelligent and graceful songwriting is not limited by genre and spans pop, rock, jazz, contemporary folk, country and even Celtic and vaudeville stylings. Indie-music.com describes Korenne as "a great trapeze artist, floating effortlessly through a multitude of genres, her superb voice catching her each time with equal ease. She seduces you by creating a mood, setting a table of unnamable delights, her opulent voice drawing you in before you realize you're even hungry."

Korenne grew up internationally before moving on to Yale University and the London School of Economics. After co-founding the international nonprofit Geekcorps-which brings high-tech volunteers to the developing world-Korenne decided to focus her energies on music.
