The Lanesboro School Board, meeting on Thursday, September 20, set the proposed levy for 2008 at $494,472, a decrease of 2.39 percent from 2007's levy amount of $506,629.

Fillmore Central School Board: Board hears preliminary audit report

Fillmore Central Superintendent Myrna Luehmann met with the district auditors recently to discuss the auditing process for the 2006-2007 school year. Luehmann shared the information she received with the school board in a preliminary audit report at the regular meeting on September 25.
According to Luehmann, the bottom line is that the General Fund has decreased $55,000, which she states is not bad, and could be a lot worse. There was an $8,700 loss in Food Service due to a transfer of revenues. The Community Education fund is also down $36,000 from last year, although that loss is decreasing every year.
Luehmann said starting up the daycare was very expensive, and each year they are working toward breaking even. The infant room is the most expensive because of the staffing needs, but the numbers for the toddler and preschool rooms are going up.
Chairman Ron Stevens agreed with other members of the board that the daycare is still a major benefit to the district, as it has helped to keep kids in the district. "It's hard to measure its worth by the profit and loss," he said.
The board approved transferring $44,000 from the General undesignated fund to the Community Ed. fund. A full audit report will be available at the October board meeting.
PR Committee
The Public Relations committee, consisting of board members John Torgrimson and Deb Ristau, gave a report on the Parent Teacher Committee meeting they attended the previous week. The meeting was held to discuss ways of promoting the school. Torgrimson mentioned a couple of ideas that came up at the meeting, and asked for approval to look into them further.
The first was promoting Fillmore Central by advertising at the Jem Theater in Harmony. According to Torgrimson, the cost is $130 per quarter for four 15-second spots, shown before every movie. The committee thought it would be an easy, inexpensive way to advertise the school.
The second idea was to update the school's brochure, which was last done in 1994 at the time of consolidation. Torgrimson brought along an example of a brochure from Kelly Printing in Preston and said they can print any number needed, and the information is stored so updates can be made at any time. The committee will be looking further into the costs of the advertising.
