Lanesboro Local opens grand new marketplace

Thu, Jun 27th, 2013
Posted in Lanesboro Business Announcements

On Saturday, July 6 from 1-4pm, Lanesboro Local will celebrate the opening of their bigger, better Marketplace at the historic corner of Parkway Avenue & Coffee Street in Lanesboro, Minn. A ribbon cutting ceremony at 2pm will officially recognize the non-profit retailer’s new place in town – in the spacious, 2500-sq-ft main level at 201 Parkway Avenue North. Stand by for store tours, local food tastings, artisan demonstrations, live local music and festive sidewalk fair.

Situated at a legendary crossroads that was once a supply center and social gathering point for immigrants pouring into Minnesota, the historic new Marketplace building retains many original accoutrements, including tin ceilings, cast iron radiators, woodwork and built-ins, as well as huge main level display windows. Impressive new features include a USDA-licensed prep room to re-package bulk foods, cheeses, cured meats and produce, and a full wall of new high-efficiency refrigeration and freezer units that will allow an expanded inventory of local and regional foods, including grass-fed beef, pastured chicken, lamb and specialty meats; local specialties including glass-bottled 1/2 gallons of extra tasty, minimally-processed Kapper’s local milk or cream (ideal for culturing homemade buttermilk or soft cheeses); farm-fresh eggs from Amish hens or hens raised on non-GMO feed. Also in store will be local vegetables in season, currently including fresh spring salad greens, fresh-cut organic asparagus, locally cultured oyster mushrooms, as well as berries, tree fruits and melons as the season progresses.

Customers can fill an Amish basket with cheeses from western Wisconsin, lefse from the famous local Norwegians in Rushford, Minn. bulk packaged snacks, bottled beverages (including Lanesboro-inspired Spring Grove Rhub-Berry soda), plus unique regional crackers, chips, salsas, jams, sauces and more – everything needed for a picnic adventure. And after the garden season is over, Lanesboro Local Marketplace will continue to feature cold-hardy local salad greens all winter long from a passive stored solar greenhouse near Peterson, Minn.

In addition to local food, the Marketplace features in a dazzling inventory of artisan goods from the area. Trout fishing lures, garden seeds, hods and decorative landscape items. Linens, aprons and quilted handwork. Pottery and baskets. Jewelry, including a best-selling line crafted from bicycle inner tubes! Cards, .....
