Q What factors determine my credit score?

Mon, Sep 26th, 2011
Posted in Ask the Expert

A  1. Timely payments. This may seem obvious but what many people do not realize is that it only accounts for 35% of your overall score. Typically, installment and revolving debt (such as credit cards) payments will not be reflected until you are 30 days past due.

  2. Account Balances. (30%) Paying your bills on time will not guarantee an excellent credit score. It is important to show discipline with the use of credit; keep balances to a minimum.

  3. Length of time you have been borrowing. (15%) A middle- aged consumer may fare better than a recent college grad because of a longer history of repayment and more open credit files.

  4. Credit Expansion. (10%) This is often a "catch 22." Applying for additional credit will demonstrate an ability to handle more accounts, however this could reflect negatively as it may indicate a need to supplement income to meet expenses.

  5. Diversified credit. (10%) A good balance of installment and revolving debt.
