How can I protect my pet from heat stroke?

Mon, Jul 25th, 2011
Posted in Ask the Expert

Heat stroke can be a serious and even life threatening condition in your pet. Fortunately, it is easily preventable by taking these precautions and watching for the warning signs. Always make sure your pet has access to fresh clean water. Also, make sure that your pet has access to plenty of shade. Never leave pets enclosed in a vehicle, even if it doesn't seem that hot outside! If a heat advisory is announced, it's best to keep pets indoors until temperatures cool off. Warning signs of heat stroke include: excessive panting, drooling, bright red gums, staggering, lethargy, and vomiting. If you suspect that your pet has heat stroke, first try moving your pet to a cool area. Then soak your pet with cool, but not ice cold water. If available, use a fan to cool your pet down more quickly and call your veterinarian.
