Land stewardship project one-act play premiers this winter in SE MN

Posted in Arts & Culture

A new play will premier in eight southeast Minnesota church social halls and community theatres this winter with a performance in Chatfield at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Sunday, February 20th. Produced by the Land Stewardship Project, the play is written by LSP's Doug Nopar, and directed by Fillmore County theatre artist, Eva Barr.

Titled Look Who's Knockin', a retiring couple wrestles with the future of their farm. The one-act play explores the moral dilemma faced by Nettie and Gerald, long-time conservation farmers. Should they let their farm go for top dollar to the largest farmer in the county? Or, should they help out a young farm couple, interested in starting a dairy?

Created out of numerous interviews and stories of both beginning and retiring farmers in recent years, the play will focus on the pending decision of a retiring farm couple, a decision that will determine the legacy of their farm. The play and the discussion that follows with the audience will raise the question of "Who will farm the land in the next generation?"

This play is funded in part by the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council through the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage fund as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the vote of the people of Minnesota on November 4, 2008.

For more information on the play or to make reservations, contact the Land Stewardship Project office in Lewiston at 507-523-3366 or e-mail: dnopar@landstewardshipproject.org.
