Northern Lights Women's Chorus fall concert

Mon, Nov 15th, 2010
Posted in Arts & Culture

"A Choral Celebration" will be presented by Northern Lights on Sunday, November 21, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Decorah Lutheran Church, 309 Winnebago St., in Decorah. Doors open at 1:30 p.m.

The Women's Chorus began in 1996 and celebrates its 6th season under the direction of Jane Kolarich. A graduate of St. Olaf College, Jane has thirty years of teaching and conducting music with elementary through college level students as well as many years experience as a church choral director. She currently teaches music at John Cline Elementary School in Decorah.

Jane is particularly pleased with the music for this concert that highlights diverse musical themes. The program will celebrate the Gifts of Nature with Gregg Smith's Now I Walk in Beauty and with Williams' and Martin's God of Wonders. Bob Burroughs' arrangement of Three Early American Hymn Tunes celebrates our cultural and musical heritage. The beauty and generative power of the spectrum of relationships that binds us as a people are celebrated with Rene Clausen's Set Me As a Seal, Mulholland's Fair and True, and Sandler's Sansa Kroma.

The Celebrating Youth section of the program will feature guest musicians "Jubilus," a student-led chamber ensemble from Luther College. This ensemble is made up of music lovers, music majors, and music education majors. They sing a variety of music including jazz, Palestrina, and Jocelyn Hagen, a Minnesota-based composer. The twelve students come from Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, and South Dakota.

Each Monday evening, women travel from Burr Oak, Clermont, Cresco, Ft. Atkinson, Postville, Ridgeway, Waukon, West Union and Decorah, as well as the Minnesota communities of Canton, Mabel, and Spring Grove to rehearse. A returning member, Teresa Lynch, reflects the feelings of many: "I enjoy the quality of music, the terrific director, and the collegiality of the members." Everyone celebrates the talent of the accompanist, Linda Gjerdrum. She has gifted the Chorus with her piano accompanying since the Chorus began.

Come and celebrate with Northern Lights Women's Chorus. All are welcome to a reception following the concert.
