Portrait painter and musician Matt Duckett will be Lanesboro Art Center’s 36th Artist in Residence

Posted in Lanesboro Arts & Culture

Since its inception in 2001 with the first artist Erik Pearson, Lanesboro Arts Center has brought 35 artists to Lanesboro for Artist Residencies. Artist #36 will soon be here: Matt Duckett is a portrait painter and musician from LaCrosse, Wisc. He will be here February 18 – March 2, 2013, working to create portraits that draw upon traditions of art and music that he finds in Lanesboro. Matt will be meeting and connecting with community members, discovering their stories and conveying them through paint on canvas.

Matt’s connection to his portrait subjects often comes through music – Matt plays old-time Irish folk music on tenor banjo and guitar – and this will certainly be the case while he’s in Lanesboro. The Arts Center will host an acoustic jam session with Matt Duckett on Saturday, February 23 at 10 a.m. at the St. Mane Theatre. This is free and open to the public. Musicians will gather together to play music and to share stories about the history of Irish and other music traditions.

An excellent portrait artist, Matt Duckett has received numerous awards and commissions for his work. His portraits are enthusiastically representational, depicting, recording, and telling stories, with skillful mastery of the medium. His project was awarded one of two 2013 Residencies by a panel of arts professionals, from a pool of forty applicants.

In Lanesboro, Minnesota, the Lanesboro Residency Program has been providing opportunities for emerging artists to create new work and integrate work into the local community since 2001. Lanesboro Arts Center Residencies include stipend, lodging and studio space. Annual application deadline is June 30. For guidelines or more information, contact Lanesboro Arts Center, 507-467-2446 / info@lanesboroarts.org / www.lanesboroarts.org. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. The Lanesboro Arts Center serves as a regional catalyst for artistic excellence and educational development in providing diverse art experiences for people of all ages. The galleries are located at 103 Parkway Ave N; the St. Mane Theatre is located at 206 Parkway Ave N in Lanesboro, Minn.
