Barn Quilt from Houston County Selected to Represent Minnesota

SPRING GROVE, Minn. — Artwork on a Houston County barn has been chosen to represent Minnesota in a new redwork ornament kit by historic needlework designer The Posy Collection.

The “Maple Leaf” design on Karen Bingham’s barn is also featured in the book “Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement” by Suzi Parron and Donna Sue Groves.

Barn quilts from 16 states were selected for the redwork kit, which features a form of needle art that uses red thread on natural-colored muslin.

“Barn quilts are colorful patterns of quilt squares painted on panels and hung on barns and buildings that capture the spirit of American quilting and local heritage,” said Posy Lough, owner of the Posy Collection. “We took some of the more iconic ones and put them together in a kit for quilt lovers and stitchers to enjoy.”

In addition to being a work of art, each barn quilt tells a story unique to its owner or property in which it is placed. “We treasure the beautiful hardwood forests that blanket our valleys and bluff lands,” Bingham says in Parron’s book. “It is the maple tree that lets us know winter is almost over when the ‘sap is running.’ Its leaves give us abundant shade in summer and brilliant colors in autumn, and its wintery silhouette reminds us to be still and wait — because it knows the Minnesota seasons will come anew and repeat their glorious act.”

Groves, to whom the kit is dedicated, conceived of the barn quilt concept. She worked with her Ohio community to create the first quilt trail to honor her mother, thus inspiring the quilt trail movement. Now, thousands of barns across the United States feature quilt-like designs.

Lough and Parron worked together to choose the patterns and interpret them for the redwork design. The kit includes patterns for stitched ornaments featuring barn kits from 16 states. Kits can be purchased online at www.barnquiltinfo.com.

Other
states with barn quilts featured in the redwork kit include: Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, New York, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, West Virginia, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Oregon, Colorado, Missouri and Georgia.
