Center Stage Series - Luther College to present The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain

DECORAH, Iowa—Eight ukulele masters spread a spirit of wit, playfulness and camaraderie as they strum through a diverse repertoire that includes everything from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana to Otis Redding as part of Luther's 2013-14 Center Stage Series. The musicians of The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall on the Luther College campus.

Bring a ukulele and join in the ukulele-along finale song. The sheet music is available at the Ticket Office or online at http://bit.ly/16ED2F3. Audiences of all ages and musical tastes have loved and been entertained by The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain.

Their irreverent, delightful and funny approach to music belies their serious musicianship, which has landed them at Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Come and find out why they have a worldwide following.

The group was formed in 1985 just for fun, but after their wildly successful first gig, they've been performing ever since. After 28 years of entertaining eager audiences, the group still receives rave reviews that reinforce the group's wide range of musical ability.

Tom Hodgkinson of The Independent said about the group, "The idea…was not to form a comedy act, but to create a liberating musical forum where any music could be played, from funk to rock and roll to classical."

Using only ukuleles, the orchestra brings humor, freedom and exceptional playing to all styles of music from Tchaikovsky to Nirvana. The orchestra members believe that all music is open for reinterpretation as long as it's played on the ukulele.

A wide range of ukuleles is used in their shows from soprano, concert, tenor, baritone and bass, along with strumming, humming, whistling, hand jiving and tapping. They also have a wide range of artists they perform such as Prince, Lou Reed, Junior Walker and the All Stars, Kraftwerk, The Who and Chic and even Bach. Expect the unexpected from these talented folks.

The orchestra's music has been featured in movies, TV shows, on the radio and in plays and commercials. They have played for sold out crowds worldwide and revived the inspiration of ukulele playing. They have teamed up and collaborated with groups such as Madness, The Ministry of Sound and The British Film Institute.

Tickets for the show are $26 for adults, $2 .....
