HPC 2016 Preservation Award given to Steve Harmon

Mon, May 9th, 2016
Posted in Chatfield Arts & Culture

Each year since 2009 during Preservation Month (May), the Chatfield Heritage Preservation Commission honors an individual, property owner or project with its Preservation Award. The purpose of the award is to raise the visibility of the city preservation program by recognizing significant achievements in the preservation, protection and use of Chatfield’s unique historical and architectural heritage.

The 2016 Preservation Award goes to Steve Harmon in recognition of his outstanding contributions toward the preservation and adaptive use of the historic buildings occupied by the Chatfield Center for the Arts.

A mechanical engineer with an abiding interest in historic building systems, Steve’s work in the history of ventilation has enabled us to identify and appreciate the heritage resource value of the original HVAC systems in the former Chatfield High School and Potter Auditorium. For the past several years he has worked closely with the city preservation program on the Chatfield Center for the Arts project. His research has made it possible to adapt and reuse many of the early 20th century building systems as components of the new arts center.

In 2014, Steve presented a preliminary report on the results of his Chatfield investigations at the annual meeting of the Construction History Society of America, an international scholarly organization dedicated to the study of the history and evolution of all aspects of the built environment.
