Another beautiful day for the joint Fillmore/Houston fourth grade Farm Safety Day Camp held at the Mabel Steam Engine Grounds. The farmer volunteers were planting corn like crazy last Tuesday, so we had a number of very capable substitutes at Farm Safety Day Camp. The students were enthused, the presenters and FFA helpers were at their best. I always appreciate the community support to make an event like this possible!

And now, these are the people I would like to thank!

The 457 students, their teachers, and chaperones from 13 schools, the fourth grade classes from Fillmore Central, Houston, Rushford-Peterson, Lanesboro, St. John’s Wykoff, St. John’s Caledonia, St. Mary’s Caledonia, Chatfield, Mabel-Canton, Spring Grove, La Crescent, Kingsland, and Crucifixion of LaCrescent.

Thanks to the City of Mabel for providing much needed support from the EMT Ambulance Crew, Fire Department, and use of the Steam Engine Grounds. A bonus is being able to serve lunch in the Hesper-Mabel Historical Old Barn.

The volunteer presenters are the people who really make this possible, listed by topic and the organization they represent are: Electric Safety, Tri-County Electric, Brad Pecinovsky; PTO Safety, U of M Extension- Fillmore/Houston Counties, Jerrold Tesmer; Mabel Ambulance, Neil Folstad; Lawn Mower Safety, U of M Extension-Houston County, Meghan Wall; ATV Safety, Jared Barnes, Braden Barnes; Grain Drowning, representing Fillmore County Farm Bureau, Melinda Miller and Ruth Meirick; Tractor Rollover, Houston County Farm Bureau, Cynthie Christensen; Livestock Safety, Harmony Vet Clinic, Dr. Lynn Aggen and Megan Witt; Sun and Seatbelt Safety, Fillmore County Public Health, Brenda Pohlman; 911 Simulator, Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office, Dan Dornink, Kevin Beck, Jesse Grabau, Tim Melver and Kevin Beck, and Sheriff Daryl Jensen; Basic First Aid, Chatfield Ambulance EMT, Dawn Lubahn, Zach Linnell, and Ed Hallisy; General Farm Safety, Doug Lind, R-P FFA Ryan Ruberg and Jordan Bergan; and Fire Safety, Mabel Fire Department, Bob Schutte; with Fillmore County SWCD, Dean Thomas, pinch hitting wherever needed.

This year we had Gundersen Lutheran MedLink Air in the morning. They work closely with the Mabel Ambulance as ground support. The helicopter adds a lot of excitement as they land and take-off. We are always pleased when they are able to be with us!
