"My mother went to town probably two times in the wintertime."

The Art of Farming is a project of the Collaborative for Watershed Sustainability to gather stories about farm life in southeastern Minnesota before World War II. Stories have been gathered from individuals near Harmony, Lake City and Wells Creek near Red Wing.

ē There was always cooperation in my family-- my father and his brother worked together in the neighborhood way back when I was a kid. That was fun because then the cousins got together at the same time.

Everything was much slower. My mother went to town probably two times in the wintertime, once before Christmas to shop. Well, we were 12 miles from home and after you ride to town in a sled behind a team of horses for a couple of hours, youíve had it. My folks always had a car, but you never could drive it in the wintertime, the roads were nothing but mud tracks. In the winter we used to cut fences to go across snowy fields and get into town on a shorter route. Sometimes there was so much snow we just went over the fence wires. When my dad took over the farm, he lived in my grandmotherís house, which had one of these back porches with a roof that slants down to about eight feet from the ground up. In the wintertime it would snow so much my sister and I could just climb up to the top of the roof and slide down off the snowbanks. And the roads were just one big white sheet. I was so thrilled, one year I got skis and we lived just a mile from a country store, across the field. I could get on the skis and go to the store across the field and have only a mile to go.

Interestingly enough, I was the first grandchild in my motherís family and my grandfather gave me a Shetland pony when I was four years old. Now that pony was my wheels, in those days. I used to get on and ride, go around and spend time at my auntís and uncleís. Then next door was a family who were close to me, like a Grandfather and Grandmother. As a kid I went to their house a lot, which was ok with them. They had much more money than our family had. I have to admit that I had a standard of living that was higher than many around me, we had utilities in our new house, that kind of thing. This other family had beautiful things, and I learned a lot. My mother and her family were very artistic. So I have to attribute a lot of my thinking and my ideas to that background.

The one thing I learned, I would go to these places and they would be divulging family secrets, almost anyway, .....
