Gene A. Ziebell

Gene Ziebell, 74, of rural Rushford, died Thursday, June 29, 2000 on his farm from complications of a heart condition.
Gene A. Ziebell was born on October 18, 1925, in Winona to Arthur and Marie (Dabelstein) Ziebell. He attended school in Winona and served in the U.S. Navy during WW II from 1944 until 1947. He was promoted from Seaman to Signalman First Class. He took basic training in Chicago Great Lakes, combat duty for two and a half years in the South Pacific Theatre of War aboard the U.S.S. Hyman Destroyer until being discharged. He received a citation award for serving in the Pacific Theater of War. Gene married Dolores Drussell at St. Johnís Catholic Church in Winona on August 22, 1953. He worked in Winona for the National Tea Grocery Store in the meat department and farmed at Wyattville, MN and Hart, MN. He dairy farmed for 37 years while raising chickens, hogs, beef cows, steers, and crops. He was a past member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rushford and was currently a member of of St. Paulís Episcopal Church in Winona. In both churches Gene served as a Vestryman, board member, and in the church choir. He was a member of the Rush Creek School Board, ASCS committee member, State Fire Warden from 1967 until the present, and the Winona Area Barber shoppers. He was a conservationist and sportsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores, two sons Allen (Brenda) Ziebell of Rushford and Daniel Ziebell of Rochester, a daughter Annette (Roger) Bradley of Lanesboro, six grandchildren, Emily, Nicholas, Amanda, Andrew, Audrey, and Avery, two brothers Kenneth (Deloris) Ziebell of Stockton, MN and Everett Ziebell of Holmen, WI, a sister Lois Wrice of California. Gene was preceded in death by one sister.

The funeral service for Mr. Ziebell was held Monday, July 3, 2000 at St. Paulís Episcopal Church in Winona with the Rev. Ernest Harrelson officiating. Burial was in St. Josephís Catholic Cemetery in Rushford. Hoff Funeral Homes - Cook Rushford Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
