CDR. Thomas Joseph Gossman

CDR. Thomas Joseph Gossman, 79, of Pensacola, died Saturday, January 19, 2002.

CDR. Thomas Joseph Gossman was born November 29, 1922 to Clifford Gossman and Mary Bridget O'Connor Gossman in Owatonna, MN. He was the eldest of nine children. CDR. Gossman was a 29 year naval veteran and proudly served during WWII as a fighter/bomber pilot in the Pacific Theatre. He also served in the Korean War.

After retiring from the Navy in 1971, Thomas attended the University of West Florida and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting. He was a Life Member of the North Pensacola Optimist Club and served as Secretary-Treasurer 1976-1978 and President 1978-1979. He received the Optimist of the Year Award in 1977-1978 and Outstanding Service Awards in 1982-1985. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed a good joke. He was a devout Catholic and attended Our Savior Catholic Church.

Thomas Gossman is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, Marie Thompson Gossman, of Pensacola; and six children, Beverly Austin, of Williamsburg, VA., Peggy Price,of Toano, VA, Michael, of Biloxi, MS, Gary, of Lake Placid, FL, Dennis, of Pensacola, and Timothy, of Pensacola. He is also survived by brothers, Robert, Vince, and Philip; and sisters, Alice, Marge, Betty, and Fran, all of MN. There are 20 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother James Gossman, of Preston, MN.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at Our Savior Catholic Church, January 23, 2002. Burial with military honors was at Barrancas National Cemetery.
