To the Editor,
I felt stunned and dismayed to read in the “Notes from a County Kitchen” column (Feb. 12, 2001) the quip that “A small town is where everybody not only knows which men beat their wives, but also which wives need it.”

No one deserves to be beaten. Domestic violence is a crime, not a joke.

To the Editor,
Eminem’s (controversial rap singer whose lyrics are considered offensive to women and gays) music is about domestic abuse, wife abuse, murder, rape, and other violence against women and gays.

Eminem has been honored with four nominations and might be performing his hate-filled music on the CBS telecast or the Grammy Awards on February 21, 2001.

Family Violence Prevention Fund Executive (FVPF) Director Esta Soler said, “These hate-filled messages de-sensitize people to abuse. They are dangerous and do not deserve a national platform. At a time when domestic violence is destroying families in every corner of our nation, it would be grossly irresponsible for CBS to give Eminem time on national telvision to espouse violence against women and girls. If he does perform, we will consider a boycott against sponsors of the program”

The people at “Speaking Up,” which is a project for FVPF in collaboration with the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, and Fillmore Family Resource Center would like the citizens of Fillmore County to speak up and try to stop Eminem from performing. You can do this by taking three steps, and sharing this information with others:

• Send messages to CBS at www.cbs.com (click feedback) and the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences at www.grammy.com (click webmaster) urging them not to have Eminem perform on the program. Please send a copy to speakingup@prsolutionsdc.com

• Urge CBS to run at least one public service announcement on domestic violence during its national broadcast of the Grammy Awards; and

• Demand that the program be balanced by having the host or a presenter address the terrible cost of domestic violence to our families and our society.

Remember to send a copy of your message to “Speaking Up” at speakingup@prsolutionsdc.com.

I guess the real question is...Do you want your children or grandchildren to be sent the wrong message?
