Harold O. Thoen

Harold O. Thoen, 84, of Lanesboro, a retired postmaster, died of complications of lung cancer January 24, 2002 at his home.

He was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Whalan and had lived in Lanesboro most of his life. From 1942 to 1946, he served as a medic in the Army with duty in the Asiatic-Pacific theater and achieved the rank of staff sergeant. On Oct. 13, 1951, he married Helen Hede in Minneapolis. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 38 years, including 17 years as postmaster. He was the National Weather Service recorder in Lanesboro for 23 years, was treasurer of Bethlehem Lutheran Sunday school for many years, and was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Lions Club and American Philatelic Society. Mr. Thoen was active in Boy Scouts of America and in 1976 received the bicentennial award from the Post Office Department for community services in Scouting. He enjoyed woodworking and collecting historical memorabilia

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Douglas (Cathy) of Rochester, Daniel (Carre) of Rosemount, Minn., and David (Denise) of Bloomington, Minn.; and six grandchildren. A sister preceded him in death.

The funeral was held January 26, 2002 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lanesboro, with the Rev. Kerry Eversole officiating. Burial was in Lanesboro Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Lanesboro VFW and American Legion. Johnson-Riley Funeral Home in Lanesboro was in charge of arrangements.
