Edna M. Speer

Edna M. Speer, 96, of Chatfield, formerly of Fountain, died March 25, 2002 at Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield.

Edna M. Nauman was born March 5, 1906, in Rudd, IA, later moved to LeRoy and graduated from LeRoy High School. She graduated from normal teachers training in Austin and from Winona State University. On Feb. 8, 1930, she married Franklyn Speer in LeRoy. He died in 1960. Mrs. Speer taught in Fillmore County elementary schools for 25 years. She lived in Fountain from 1960 until entering the care center in Chatfield in 1996. She was a member of Fountain United Methodist Church, was active in church women's organizations, and enjoyed quilting, gardening and crocheting.

Survivors include three sons, Ed (Matilda) of LeRoy, Stan (Sharon) of Fountain and Vern of Dover; three daughters, Beverly Nagel of Stewartville, Mona (Clayt) Malley of St. Charles and Barbara (Tom) Hockert of Rochester; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Lloyd Nauman of LeRoy; and a sister, Thelma (Art) Norland of Spring Lake Park, Minn. She was preceded in death by a daughter, five brothers and two sisters.

The funeral for Edna M. Speer was March 28, 2002 at the United Methodist Church in Chatfield, with the Rev. Dave Westlake of Fountain United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in LeRoy Cemetery. Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield was in charge of arrangements.
