Helen R. Hughes, 81, of rural Chatfield, a registered nurse, died Sept. 5, 2001 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester.

Helen R. Foley was born Oct. 4, 1919, in rural Murdock, MN, grew up there and graduated from Murdock High School. In June 1943 she received a registered nursing degree from Peabody Hospital School of Nursing in Webster, SD, and then was supervisor of the operating room at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, MN. On June 23, 1951, she married Leo Hughes in Murdock. They moved to rural Chatfield in 1952. Mrs. Hughes was employed at Olmsted Community Hospital in Rochester about 25 years and worked in the new-baby nursery.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Jim (Cindy) of Marysville, WA., and Dan (Elaine) of Austin; six daughters, Mary (Dennis) Ludwig of North Platte, NE, Kathleen (Greg) Spoo and Laurie Hughes, both of Rochester, Shannan Hughes of Minneapolis, Rita (Bernie) Buehler of Kasson and Mollie Hughes of Austin; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Francis (Louise) Foley of Clara City, MN; and two sisters, Winnifred Foley of Murdock and Mary Dolan of Benson, MN. Two brothers and a sister preceded her in death.

A funeral Mass for Helen R. Hughes was held September 8, 2001 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Chatfield, with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Chatfield. Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield was in charge of arrangements.
