Joseph G. Westby

Joseph Gerhard Westby, 94, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at the Clarion Health Care Center, where he was a resident.

Mr. Westby was born December 18, 1906, to Christian and Dora (Elefson) Westby on their family farm near Rushford, Minnesota.

He graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 1928. For 17 years he taught history and band in several Iowa towns. He married Blanche Paulson, who was also a history teacher, in 1934. Mr. Westby earned his Master of Arts in music from the University of Iowa in 1940. He returned to Forest City in 1945 and began employment with the New York Life Insurance Company. In 1965, he became a Chartered Life Underwriter for NYLIC. Mr. Westby served on the school board and the city council in Forest City, as well as several civic organizations. He and his family were members of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Following his retirement in 1971, Mr. and Mrs. Westby lived briefly in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas before returning to Forest City, Iowa. After the death of his first wife in 1981, he married Vera Frowick Peterson in 1982. They lived in Decorah and Mesa, Arizona before moving to Clarion in 1992. They lived at the Meadows Retirement Home and attended First Lutheran Church in Clarion. Musically gifted, Mr. Westby led or participated in bands and choirs throughout his adult life. He was also a very skilled golfer, an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

He is survived by his daughter Margaret (John) Wold of Evanston, Illinois.

A funeral service was held Sunday, July 15 at Highland Prairie Church near Rushford, Minnesota. Internment was conducted at Highland Prairie Cemetery.

Arrangements were provided by Willim Funeral Home, Clarion, and Hoff Funeral Home-Cook Chapel, Rushford.
