Violet Van Sande, age 93, of Preston, a long time area resident, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Olmsted Community Hospital in Rochester of congestive heart failure.

Violet was born August 29, 1906 in Carimona Township, Fillmore County, the daughter of Henry and Annie (Hopeman) Van Sande. She attended rural school through the eighth grade but was a life-long learner in many fields. She lived on the family farm in Carimona Township until the death of her father. In 1968, she and her sister, Bernice, purchased a home in Preston and spent winters in town and summers on the family farm. Her sister died in 1993. Violet remained in the same house until becoming a resident of Preston Good Samaritan Center on June 15, 2000. She enjoyed history and was employed as the manager of the Fillmore County Museum until its relocation to Fountain. She also worked at Howard Gartner’s Garden Corner and Mrs. Lillejord’s Greenhouse in Preston. She was a lifelong member of the Greenleafton Reformed Church and was a Sunday School teacher and an active member of the women’s department. She enjoyed growing flowers and history.

Survivors include special caregivers, Beth Ann, Milo, David and Larry Broadwater of Preston and Jackie and Richard Burmeister of Harmony; several cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice.

The funeral for Ms. Van Sande was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2000, at the Greenleafton Reformed Church with the Rev. Jonathan Loper officiating. Burial was in the Greenleafton Cemetery. Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston was in charge of arrangements.
