It was 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11 when Lisa Vehrenkamp began her day as a Vice President in the Marketing Function at American Express on the 33rd floor of the World Financial Center in New York City. As the 1987 graduate of Spring Valley High School sat in her office across the street from the twin towers of the famous World Trade Center, she couldn't imagine that minutes later sheer terror would rip through the heart of the city's financial district.

"I got to work at 8:00 a.m. -- a little early for me," Lisa relayed in an E-mail interview on Tuesday evening.

According to Lisa, most people begin their day around 9:00 a.m. and soon businesses would be full and bustling with activity. As Lisa went about her morning routine, a loud noise interrupted her thoughts.

"It sounded like a thunderclap," Lisa said. "Another woman from my office ran in and said that the World Trade Center was on fire. We ran to the windows in my office and we could see smoke streaming out of the top 20 floors of the north tower of the World Trade Center."

As millions of Americans watched in stunned disbelief as the story of terrorism played out on national TV, Lisa and her co-worker witnessed the carnage from the front lines.

"Papers were flying everywhere and I saw a person fall from the top of the building," she said. "It was horrible."

Instinct set in and Lisa and her co-workers decided to get out of the building, until an announcement on the PA system stated that workers should not evacuate. Soon after, another announcement informed workers in the World Financial Center that a plane had crashed into the neighboring World Trade Center tower.

"We continued to watch the fire from our windows and wondered if we should return to work," Lisa said. "That seems inconceivable now."

What Lisa witnessed next was chilling. "We saw the second plane flying in from the south. I could clearly see that it was a United passenger plane and that it was headed right for the World Trade Center".

The remainder of the horrifying scenes have played out in nearly every newspaper and television station nationwide. The tragedy has become etched in the minds of people throughout the world.

Lisa said that she and co-workers immediately began to evacuate the building. People walked and ran toward the Hudson River, according to Lisa.
