Iron medallions to adorn LanesboroBy Mike McGrathMonday, July 23, 2001

Visiting artist and sculptor Coral Lambert, a native of Manchester, England, formally thanked the Lanesboro City Council last Monday evening for its support and encouragement on the recently completed iron medallion sculpture project sponsored by Cornucopia Art Center.

Ms. Lambert and her crew of local and visiting sculptors crafted the five large and eleven small medallions that depict different aspects of life in Lanesboro here at the turn of the century. Through a series of events held in Sylvan Park over the past few weeks, citizens were able to give input on what should be depicted on the medallions.

Lambert was also seeking permission from the council to place several of the medallions on city owned property. The old iron bridge at the west end of Coffee Street, the water pump house on Elmwood Street, and two locations in Sylvan Park were approved by the council for placement of the medallions. The rest of the medallions will be placed on private property throughout the city.

"It should make some interesting stopping places for our tourists, and locals too," declared Mayor John Brose as he thanked Ms. Lambert and Cornucopia Director John Davis for the unique effort on Lanesboros behalf.

Librarian search narrowed

Library Board chairman, Frank Wright, presented the council with the boards recommendations for candidates for the citys librarian position.

The library board interviewed four of fourteen applicants for the position and sought ratification of its recommendation for the top two candidates.

In the discussion, Mayor Brose inquired if either of the selected candidates were certified as librarians, noting that if the city ever considered moving the library to the school then the librarian would have to be certified.

To this, Wright responded that the board had not wished to limit its candidate pool to certified librarians for the part-time position.

When Mayor Brose mentioned that the school had approached the city about moving the library to the school, Councilman Hal Cropp clarified that the school had not approached the city, but that only certain individuals in the community had been discussing the library move.

On a motion by Cropp, seconded by Councilwoman Peggy Hanson, the council ratified the library boards recommendation without further comment.
