Hazel Throne, 88, formerly of Preston, died Monday morning, August 14, 2000 at Oneota River View Care Facility in Decorah, IA.
Hazel Throne was born June 26, 1912, in Polk County, MN, on a farm near Fertile, to Ludvig and Emma (Juelson) Larson. She attended country school and graduated from teachers training in McIntosh, MN. She married C. Martin Throne on August 20, 1933, in McIntosh, then moved to Emmons, MN. He died on October 15, 1984. She taught country school for many years and took courses at Mankato State College. At age 48 she went back to school and received her B.S. degree from Winona State College in 1968. Hazel was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Preston and a member of the Minnesota Education Association and Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. She taught in country schools in Polk, Freeborn, and Fillmore counties and at the Preston elementary school where she retired in 1977. The highlight of her teaching career was being nominated for Minnesota Teacher of the Year in 1976. After retirement she taught remedial reading. She enjoyed handiwork, reading, playing bridge, being outdoors, spending winters in Florida and summers in Minnesota, and time with her family and friends.
She is survived by three daughters: Marlene (Robert) Sorenson of Decorah; Lois (John) Duff and Audrey (Jim) Whitney both of Alva, FL; a son, Richard (Karen) Throne of Scarville, IA; a brother, Arnold of Fertile; two sisters, Helen Gunderson and Mabel Hanson, both of Fertile; 14 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin; a grandson Lynn Curtis Whitney; a sister Bertha Laurin, and four brothers, Harold, William (who died in infancy), Lloyd and Joseph Larson.
The funeral for Mrs. Throne was held Thursday, August 17, 2000 at Emmons Lutheran Church in Emmons. Rev. Bernard Daiker officiated. Burial was in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Emmons, MN.
