To the Editor,

“A tribute to volunteerism”

The definition of a volunteer is a person willing to give his service to another. Almost everyone becomes a volunteer throughout the course of a lifetime. This can be a very important part of a successful organization, business, church, or school. On Wednesday, May 1st, at the Lanesboro High School, volunteerism was at its peek. A program called "Every 15 Minutes" was presented to the students in grades 10 –12.

I have taught in Lanesboro for many years, and the spirit of service was especially exemplified so many times throughout the day. This program was one of the best Lanesboro has ever had!! The entire lyceum was free!!(volunteerism). Two remarkable women from the Rushford EMT department, named Mary Burt and Michelle Robertson, initiated and organized the entire day for the students of LHS. "Hats off to these two wonderful women. I know Mary and Michelle would be the first to admit that the program could not have been such a success without the "volunteers" from so many other places. Other people and organizations that dedicated time are Mr. Jeff Boggs who permitted the program to come into the school, Pastor and Mrs. Paul Johnson, Pastor Kerry, Gunderson Medlink, Rushford EMT department, Lanesboro EMT department, Thauwald Funeral Home, Lanesboro Police Department, Fillmore County Sheriffs Department, students and parents, and the many "invisible" people that are so very important in the success of a program. If I were to speculate, there were at least 75 people who "volunteered" for this special day at Lanesboro High School. I especially salute these remarkable people an incredibly successful day.

Because I have been talking about the spirit of volunteerism, I find this a very appropriate time to express my appreciation to the Lanesboro Fire Department and the EMT Department for the dedication that has been demonstrated to the community and the Lanesboro Public School. I have been especially fortunate to have a personal experience with the Lanesboro Fire Department. Every year for at least 20 years ( I remember Curt Hanson and Tom Smith) two or three men have come into my health class and demonstrated C.P.R. and choking techniques. One might think that these men would become very tired of doing the same thing every year, BUT again the Lanesboro Fire Department demonstrated the spirit of "volunteerism" and the dedication that each and every one of them have for the community. I .....
