Bernice Westphal

Bernice Westphal, 87, a resident of Ostrander Nursing Home, died February 25, 2002 at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, where she had been a patient a short time.

Bernice Tienter was born Nov. 23, 1914, in Forestville Township, Fillmore County, and attended country schools through the eighth-grade. On Nov. 25, 1936, she married August Westphal and they were later divorced. She cleaned houses and commercial buildings in the Spring Valley area for many years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include four daughters, Beatrice (Curly) Leonard, Pat Westphal, Ruth Volkart Rollie and Donna Garnatz, all of Spring Valley; a son, Garrison (Dorothy) Tienter of Rochester; 18 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Olive Westphal of Spring Valley and LaVerna French of Dodge Center. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

The funeral was held March 1, 2002 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. Dennis Timmerman officiating. Burial was in Etna Cemetery in rural Spring Valley. Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.
