Are You Game?

A quick note on the NFL playoffs which are in full swing with the Vikings sitting on the couch watching on TV like most everyone else. Look for the Rams, Eagles, Patriots and Ravens to go to the next level. The Packers proved that they can win at home easily, but on carpet it’s something else. Even the lowly Vikes knocked off the Packers at the Dome. Look for the Rams to go on a roll after clobbering the Pack and steamroll their way to New Orleans where they’ll meet the Patriots. The Rams will win handily.
• In the NBA, the TimberPups are showing what a zone defense can do to lift an eighth seed team into first place. The performance of Wally Sczerbiak, who has elevated his game to the next level, has taken some of the pressure off of Kevin Garnett to carry the team day in and day out. This one-two punch allows a slew of other players to step up as the third man while Terrell Brandon heals his injuries – Chauncy Billups, Gary Trent, Anthony Peeler and, even Rasho Nesterovic, have played this role.

The Lakers are on a downward spiral. Shaq has been restless and got into a scuffle with the Bulls’ center Brad Miller (remember that whiner from Purdue?) in the Lakers’ overtime loss. Kobe Bryant has not been playing at superstar caliber lately.

There is parity in the NBA West with the Spurs, Kings, Lakers, T-Wolves and Dallas Mavs all competing at the top of the heap. The Clippers are a team to watch, as this club of young hotshots are finally pulling together and winning games. Alvin Gentry, a former coach of the Pistons during the Grant Hill era, has done a great job massaging egos and parceling out playing time.

The New Jersey Nets are one of the surprises of the East. Just goes to show you what happens when a wannabee superstar like Stephon Marbury is traded to the Suns for a team playing point guard in Jason Kidd. Kidd can score, rebound, play D and hand out assists. Same team as a year ago, different point guard and a very different outcome.

The Bucks and Raptors are still holding their own atop the East. Meanwhile, the Knicks, Heat, 76ers, and Magic have all had disappointing starts. The Knicks are slumping with interim coach Don Chaney. Their starting five is not producing and their bench is over-paid and under-performing.

The Knickerbockers, with four guards and a string-bean power forward in Marcus Canby just can’t compete at this level anymore.
• In a few weeks time the B .....
