MN 2020 Education Policy Fellow John Fitzgerald's Statement on AYP Results

Posted in State of Minnesota

SAINT PAUL, MN - After the Minnesota Department of Education said that nearly half the schools in the state failed to make adequate yearly progress under the federal No Child Left Behind law, Minnesota 2020 Education Policy Fellow John Fitzgerald released the following statement:

"These numbers are not a surprise. No Child Left Behind is designed to undermine confidence in public schools by ensuring all schools eventually fail to meet these flawed federal standards.

"Schools are not afraid of measurement, but inaccurate measurement does more harm than good.

"For the sake of our children and future growth as a state, we need more comprehensive accountability measurements for students and teachers that fairly and accurately evaluate performance.

"It's irrational to believe, in a state like Minnesota, with graduation and college acceptance rates above national averages, that more than half of our schools are truly failing."

Minnesota 2020 has called for state policymakers to remove the state from flawed and unfunded NCLB guidelines. Any loss in federal income is offset by jettisoning a program that is ultimately harmful to our students.
