SUPER BOWL DWI ENFORCEMENT TO FLAG IMPAIRED DRIVERS FOR "ILLEGAL USE OF KEYS"

Posted in State of Minnesota

ST. PAUL - Minnesotans planning to party for Super Bowl weekend need to make the call for a safe and sober ride as added DWI patrols will be on the roads. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS) reports during Super Bowl weekends 2006-2008, MCDLXXIV (1,474) motorists were arrested for DWI. In the same period, alcohol-related crashes accounted for five of seven motorists killed; all five were not buckled up.

"The key to the game is to hand your keys off to a sober driver," says Lt. Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol. "Drivers arrested for DWI will find their lives in very poor field position with consequences such as jail time, loss of license and huge costs."

Roeske stresses that party hosts huddle with friends before the coin toss to figure out their game plan to avoid driving impaired: call a taxi or use public transportation, designate a sober driver, or stay at the location of the party.

Throughout 2010, enhanced DWI patrols will focus on 13 counties that accounted for more than one-half of the state's total alcohol-related deaths (267 of 519) and serious injuries (605 of 1,159) during 2006-2008: Anoka, Dakota, Hennepin, Olmsted, Otter Tail, Ramsey, Rice, St. Louis, Scott, Sherburne, Stearns, Washington and Wright. The counties are determined based on the total number of alcohol-related deaths and serious injuries over a three-year period.
