Gophers get best of Falcons, two-fold

The Fillmore Central and Chatfield basketball squads faced one another on Friday the 14th. In Chatfield, the ladies did battle, and the Gophers got off to a quick 9-2 start. FC fought back with a 13-2 run. They tied the game 17-17 roughly midway through the first. Connor Nagle was instrumental in that. She had 10 points through 8 minutes of play. At halftime, the Gophers led 26-24. FC's perfect free throw line work, 10 of 10, allowed them to keep pace. To begin the second half, Chatfield scored 6 of the first 7 points, extending their lead to 32-25. That small run proved pivotal. The home squad would never see their lead dip below five points for the duration of the game. Behind a three-pronged attack of Karen Sass (18 points, 13 rebounds), Kenna Moechnig (14 points), and Sarah Costello (13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals), the Gophers triumphed 54-45 over FC's two-girl show of Nagle (22 points) and Alex Peterson (17 points). The twosome scored all but six of the Falcons points. Rebounding was also a key factor as Chatfield dominated the glass 39-20. The Gopher win avenges a 49-48 loss in November.

On the boy's side of the equation in Preston, Chatfield used a 19-1 first half run to turn a 10-9 deficit into a 28-11 lead. Ten-plus minutes went by without the home Falcons scoring a field goal; they only had five as a team in the first stanza. At halftime, the Gophers led 32-17. In the second, FC couldn't mount a comeback. Five-nine junior Gopher guard Jake Peterson's driving spins in the paint made sure of it. He tallied a game high 24 points, leading his team to a 72-51 victory, their second straight conference success. Erik Hilgren and Josh Bernard had 10 in support. Tyler Eickhoff and James Skaalen paced FC with 14 and 12 respectively.

Through one month of games, the R-P boys had remained undefeated via a number of methods. Some games, they relied heavily on the 3-point shot. When those failed to drop, they were able to shoot lights-out from 2-point range or the free throw line. A .....
