Player Profile: Carter Brandt ranked third in state

I had the pleasure of interviewing Carter Brandt after GMLOK's wrestling match against Saint Charles. Unfortunately, his team was beaten, but Carter was not deterred. He won his match, and the team gave a good effort, so everyone was in good spirits. Carter was all smiles as he answered my questions. I could tell he is proud of the recognition he so deserves.

Carter is the son of Connie and Ken Brandt. He has a younger sister, Paige, who is a freshman at Grand Meadow. When asked what his parents thought of the paper's interest in their son, he replied, "They are excited for me." When Carter was in kindergarten and wanted to wrestle, his dad told him, "You don't know anything about wrestling." Well after 106 career wins it's safe to say Carter proved his dad wrong. Carter still gives him "a hard time for it."

Carter is currently ranked third in state in the 215 pound weight class; he is in line to qualify for the state tournament. As a junior, he finished fourth in state and labeled that as his favorite memory in wrestling. Judging by tonight, he will have another strong showing in the state tournament this year. The competition involved with wrestling is what Carter loves about this sport. "Wrestling pushes you, nothing is easy." Wrestling is not the only sport that Carter enjoys; he actually prefers football over wrestling. He is an offensive and defensive lineman, which is probably why he is such a great wrestler. Pushing and moving opponents off a spot, and staying lower than the opposing player are important in both wrestling and football. He started playing in the 4th grade for the flag football team.

Carter's other hobbies include anything that has to do with being outside. He says he can't stand sitting still. I asked him if he likes videogames and his answer surprised me, "No! I hate them." Very surprising for a teenager, even one as active as Carter. He also likes snowmobiling and racing. With his "free" time he works on various farms, doing whatever needs to be done as long as it requires him to be busy. With all his extracurricular activities, he still keeps his grades at a 2.8 GPA. Like most students, he doesn't know if he wants to go to college yet. But, like most people, he will still find his way; his athleticism and work ethic will lead him to greatness.

Four teams are fighting for the SEC conference in boys' basketball. Glenville-Emmons was unbeaten (10-0, 14-0) until falling to lowly Hope Lutheran. That loss tied Spring Grove (10-1, 11-6) atop the league. It also narrowed things up for Houston (8- .....

The FCLMC Timberwolves started their dual with the LA-RP Screamin' Eagles very well. Freshman Trevor Barnes and sophomore Connor Hansen put FCLMC up 12-0 with two straight pins at 103 and 112. From there, though, things went downhill fast. FCLMC wou .....

Wins have been few and far between for the Fillmore Central boys. Through two months of play, the Falcons amassed just two, versus Wabasha-Kellogg and at Spring Grove. They've been close a number of times, real close. They lost at Lewiston-Altura 66 .....

It wasn't really five-on-one; the final stat line just looked that way. Smith's teammates came to play (save for Dalton Stoen who was on the bench in street clothes). They even went into the break tied with the Trojans at 18. Then R-P ratcheted up t .....
