First Half Falcons

The Fillmore Central Falcon girl's basketball squad played three games during the week of Jan 25. In all three contests, one thing was certain. The verdict was in after just 18 minutes of play.

Against Mabel-Canton, the halftime score was an eye-popping 52-15! The senior-laden (4 starters) Falcons overwhelmed a young (3 seniors, 3 sophomores, 5 freshmen) and depleted (two girls didn't play) lady Cougar squad. M-C committed 27 turnovers, the Falcons six. Fillmore Central had 26 steals, the Cougars four. The Falcons made 50% of their three's (6 of 12) and 85% of their free throws (17-20). Connor Nagle notched a season high 34 points (her second 30-plus performance of the year). She also had 8 steals, 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Fellow senior, Nashia Soland was Nagle's right-hand woman with 13 points and 7 steals. For the Cougars, sophomore forward Christy Welscher was the leading scorer with 7. FC let off the gas in the second stanza and won 79-27.

A night later, versus the Plainview-Elgin-Millville Bulldogs, it was more of the same. Fillmore posted a 35-8 lead through 18 minutes of play! Again, it was turnovers and steals. PEM had 22 turnovers; the Falcons 17 steals. Alex Peterson led the Falcons in scoring and rebounding with 15 and 6. Soland had 12 points and 5 steals. Even without star guard Connor Nagle scoring a lot (7 points), the Falcons posted their 4th straight victory 55-27.

The lady Falcons then took their first half show to Lewiston. The Cardinals were similarly steamrolled (36-17). Connor Nagle's one-game hiatus from double-digits, and as Fillmore's leading scorer, ended. She tallied 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 steals. From there, FC got 30 points collectively from its other four starters. Alex Peterson grabbed 10 boards (to go along with her 7). With stout free throw shooting, 14 of 17, the girls notched their fifth straight 62-40. They sit in second place in the Three River conference.

Mabel-Canton's junior center Steve Smith is listed at 6'2". His weight isn't on the program, but he is not a small guy (260ish?). With soft hands and a good touch in close, he is the Cougar's most reliable weapon. With 35 and 28 point performances a .....
