Gophers start slow, complete comback

On senior night in Chatfield, the home team immediately faced an onslaught from visiting Fillmore Central. The Falcons hit eight of their first nine shots. Those buckets put the Gopher's in a substantial hole (as high as 14-points). Tyler Eickhoff spearheaded the FC attack, scoring 12 first half points. Chatfield was able to slice the lead to seven at the half (42-35), but FC looked sharp and was scoring often. As fast as the well got wet in the first stanza for FC, it went dry in the second. Chatfield's started pumping nicely. Courtesy of trifectas, two by Nate Skare, one by Erik Hilgren, they took their first lead since 4-2, 50-49 at the 12:05 mark. The Goph's actually turned the tables on the Falcons, building a nine-point advantage (60-51), but FC didn't go away. A Drew Bahl three at 2:31 knotted things at 62-62. Down the stretch, only Zach Olstad could convert for Fillmore (a three and a two). Meanwhile, Chatfield rotated the scoreboard at the free throw line, converting 10 of their last 11 attempts. It propelled them to a 72-67 victory. Four Gophers scored in double figures, Hilgren (21), Jake Peterson (17), Skare (14), and Jesse Julian (11). FC matched that distinction, getting 15 from Bahl, 14 from Eickhoff, 13 from Olstad, and 10 from Colton Hampel. Chatfield sweeps the season series.

One oft-heard sports cliché is, a game is never over until it's over. A team can also win 8/9ths of a game, and still lose. For the Chatfield girls, it was the latter against 6th ranked, 19-3 conference champion Caledonia. Through the first 14 .....
