Burro boys state bid

For the Lanesboro boy's golf team, it was a give-and-take kind of season. They did so with non-conference rival Fillmore Central, finishing behind the Falcons twice early in the season, but besting them three times later in the season (handing them their only dual meet loss). Conference-wise, the Burros didn't necessarily dominate the SEC. With not every SEC foe yielding a golf team, doing so wouldn't have been exceptionally meaningful. Houston was their biggest (only) conference-rival. The Burros bested the 'Canes at the SEC meet. The 'Canes best the Burros at the sub-sectional meet. The Burros then won when it counted, at sectionals, to earn a trip to state. All throughout the swaying journey, the Burros relied on balance. Cory Strom was probably their best golfer, but Lucas Johnson, Braden Hanson, C.D. Hanson, Liam Dorn, and Dakota Dorn all factored into the team equation at one time or another. At state, that team equation paid dividends again. The Burros didn't take first or second. But third place out of an eight-team state field certainly isn't anything to be ashamed of. Only Springfield High (with a two-day 36-hole team total of 644) and Providence Academy (653) bested the Burros (669). Springfield placed two guys in the top 15. Providence placed four in the top 23. Only Lucas Johnson faired so well (or better) for Lanesboro. He shot a Day 1 86, but a Day 2 75 (on the par-72 Pebble Creek links at Becker Minnesota). His 161 tied for 17th place, or 15 strokes off meet champion Matt Chalberg's (Trinity) 146 mark. Eighth-grader Liam Dorn shot a 167 (tied for 27th), junior Cory Strom a 169 (33rd), and senior Dakota Dorn a 175 (50th) to round out the Burros top four finishers. Braden Hanson shot a 181 (tied for 64th place) and C.D. Hanson a 199 (tied for 81st place). As for the counties two individual qualifiers, Fillmore Central freshman Peter Rislove finished tied for 34th (170) and Rushford-Peterson senior Justin Boyum finished tied for 45th (174). Rislove was consistant (43, 41, 44, 42). Boyum found a better groove on Day 2 (42, 42) then Day 1 (46, 44). Eighty-seven total athletes were in the field. Burro golf coach John Smith, "it's a long tournament and the boys all played well and each contributed to the teams success which enabled them to bring home the third place trophy and a medal. It was a great way to cap off a tremendous season for Lanesboro golf. Thank you for all the support and help from everyone especially the parents."

And so it...delays

Losing is never fun. Losses in competitive games particularly hurt. Losing games that go-beyond regulation, ones where victory seems so close at some point, are excruciating, especially in the play-offs. The 5th seeded Rushford-Peterson gals unfortu .....
