Ready, Set, Go...2011 sports begins

Summer may still be in bloom, but all the spiking and setting in the gyms, cracking and crunching on the fields, make it abundantly clear autumn is on the horizon. With that naturally come fall sports, with the gals getting things started first.

Four county teams began their 2011 volleyball season. In Harmony on the 25th, the Burros came calling on the Falcons. They left disappointed. The home squad prevailed in three straight sets, 25-12, 25-16, and 25-13. Youngsters led the way for FC. Sophomore Taylor Case registered 13 kills. Freshmen Morgan Malley notched 18 assists and 5 aces. Senior Alex Peterson wasn't to be outdone by her youthful teammates. She had 9 digs and 6 kills. The Burros got 7 digs from Kaia Hungerholt, 4 assists each from Karlee Ruen and Linnea Thiss, and 4 kills from Bryn Harmon.

Meanwhile down Rushford way, the Trojans hosted their neighbor, Lewiston-Altura. The Cards seemingly had command of the match after snagging sets one and two (25-15 and 25-21). But R-P rallied to take sets three and four (25-16 and 25-21), forcing the deciding fifth set. There it was close, but L-A eked out a (shortened) 16-14 victory, winning the match. The Trojans statistical leaders were Kenzie Lind (18 kills, 10 digs), Amy Todd (23 kills), Emily Culhane (40 assists), and Kendra Crawford (11 digs).

A night later, to the northwest in Medford, the Chatfield Gophers began their season successfully, toppling the Tigers 25-16, 25-16, and 25-15.
