Five wins in five days

Through a month of softball action, the Chatfield Gophers amassed as many wins as losses (5 each). In four days, they doubled their victory total. The week began with a double-header versus FC-L. In game 1, Chatfield prevailed 5-2. It was a combination of solid pitching (Jennifer Hanson/Grace Sagdalen combined for a 4-hitter), good defense (0 errors), and enough offense (Morgan Boyum went 2-3 with an RBI). FC-L's Connor Nagle hit a solo HR, her 3rd blast of the year. In game 2, the Gophers got out-slugged 12 to 7, but won 11 to 9. Kirsten Keefe went 2-3 with 2 RBI's. Nashia Soland went 3-4 with 3 RBI's for FCL. Two days later, the Gophers traveled to Lewiston for a showdown with the undefeated #7 Cardinals. Sagdalen again took the mound and surrendered two runs on just three hits (win). The Gopher D was again strong (1 error to L-A's 4). Boyum went 3-3. Chatfield upset the Card's 5-2. R-P then came calling for a Friday double-header. Game 1 saw Sagdalen pitch strong again (7 IP, 3 R, 2 H, Win), Boyum hit well again (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI's), while Tori Woltz provided a little extra 'O' (2-4, 2 RBI's). The Goph's prevailed 10-3. Game 2 saw Chat's defense slip (eight errors). However, a 5-run top of the 7th lurched the home ahead, 13-10. They held off a late Trojan rally to pull off a 13-12 victory. Sidney Irish (2-4, 2B, 3B, 3 runs), Keefe (3-5, 2 RBI's), Woltz (2-4, 2 RBI's), and MacKenzie Miller (3 RBI's) provided offense. Kenzie Lind did her part (2-5, RBI, 3 R) for R-P. The wins give Chatfield six straight, and 7 of 8, a 10-5 overall record, or tied for first in the Three Rivers South.

In 1996, a requirement for one of my high school English classes was to complete a persuasive paper. My topic was, "Why college underclassmen basketball players should be allowed to go pro." Centerpiece in my debate was the 1995 draft class. Picks 1 .....

Numbers can be deceiving. The 7-0 Southland Rebels baseball team entered their (second) match-up with GMLOK, ranked #1 in the Class A. The Bulldogs entered 2-6, unranked. As the game played out, GMLOK's hitters stood out more prominently. Ca .....

...It looked for all-the-world the Southland Rebels had a win nearly secured. Against 1-6 R-P, they jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three. And though R-P tightened the score (6-4) with a 3-run 4th, Southland took a 13-4 lead into the bottom o .....

Baseball is a game of anticipation. The delay between every pitch only stokes the hopeful fire. Things particularly heat up when the count turns 3-2, when there are two out in the top of the ninth, or when there are runners in scoring positi .....

In all sports, there is nothing like a good comeback (the bigger the better). A 5-1 deficit entering the bottom of the sixth in high school baseball is sizeable. That's what the Fillmore Central Falcons had to overcome against PEM. Dan Gatzk .....
