Interception with 0:00 Preserves M-C Win

Mabel-Canton’s Mitch Kuhn wasn’t the Cougars’ main weapon versus Lanesboro. We didn’t tote the ball 34 times like teammate Wayne Ross. He wasn’t Ross’ running partner in crime like Weston Whalen. He didn’t complete all but one of his passes like QB Wesley Richert. But the junior made two big plays at critical times that allowed M-C to stave off a valiant Burro comeback. The last occurred with 0:00 on the clock. It preserved an M-C win. The first half was all Cougars. M-C had a 15-play scoring drive in the first quarter, and a 16-play scoring drive in the second, both capped by Ross runs (1 yard, 20 yards). Lanesboro took over with 1:44 left in the half trailing 14-0. Ross then intercepted a deflected pass. Richert found Whalen out of the backfield for a 5-yard TD pass with 0:12.7 left in the second to give M-C a 21-0 halftime lead. It was a semi-shocker considering the teams entered with equivalent 4-3 records, losses coming to the same three state ranked teams (SG, GM, Randolph).

Burros and wagons are somehow related, so the former rallied the later. Lanesboro played the ball control game in the third quarter. Their first drive went seven-plays and 57 yards. Will Semmen capped the series with a 4-yard QB-keep TD. Liam Dorn added a 2-point run. After an M-C fumble, Lanesboro went on a 12-play, 66-yard drive. Dorn’s 19-yard scamper around left end closed the gap to 21-14 heading to the fourth. Midway in, the Burros got a fourth down stop, generating more momentum. But they fumbled on their very first offensive play. Two plays later, Richert hit the junior Kuhn, wide open on a flag route, for the 33-yard score. M-C again went ahead by two scores (28-14). They stopped Lanesboro’s next series on fourth down. The Cougars ran some time off and punted with 2:30 remaining. Burro senior Tylar Miller than breathed life in his club with every step he sprinted down the sideline. His 85-yard punt return TD, and the ensuing Semmen to Matthew Luck 2-point conversion, trimmed M-C’s lead to 28-22 with 2:14 left.

Out of time-outs, Lanesboro was still in a difficult spot. They forced M-C backward offensively, and forced a punt. But with 0:23.5 seconds left, they needed a miracle. They got it. The snap was high and bobbled. Whalen was tackled at the M-C 7-yard line! With 0:19.2 seconds left, Lanesboro just needed to cover seven yards for the improbable comeback. A run play was stopped. Lanesboro spiked the ball. With 3.3 tic .....
