Koens - Gerald R. 'Jerry'

Gerald R. 'Jerry' Koens, 65, of Rochester, died June 5, 2004 at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester. He was born Dec. 18, 1938, in Worthington, Minn. He grew up in Woodstock, Minn., and graduated from Ruthton Public Schools. He began working as a teller at the Murray County State Bank in Slayton, and through promotions became assistant vice president. He also served in the South Dakota Air National Guard for 10 years. On July 17, 1965, he married Marlys Gortmaker in Sioux Falls, S.D. Mr. Koens later worked at Eveleth National Bank in Eveleth, Minn., and became vice president there. He then became president of Lanesboro State Bank and became a partner in ownership of that bank in 1984. In 1986, he became disabled and retired due to health concerns. Mr. Koens was a resident of Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield from 1993 to 1999. He then moved to Samaritan Bethany Heights in Rochester and had lived there the past five years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kerry (Karen) of Apple Valley, Minn., and Kendall (Andi) of Rochester; one daughter, Karlys Koens of Rochester; three grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy (Vern) Rydberg of Webster, S.D.; and two brothers, Harlan (Lynnette) of Winchester, Ore., and Marvin of Sioux Falls, S.D. A granddaughter and one brother preceded him in death.

The funeral for Gerald R. "Jerry" Koens was June 9 at Victory Baptist Church in Rochester, with the Rev. Darrell Mohler officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens.
