Lawrence E. Hoiness, 88, a Harmony native, died July 30, 2003 at his home.

Lawrence Hoiness was born November 20, 1914, in Harmony to Edward and Jane Hoiness. After graduating from HHS, Lawrence attended St. Olaf College in Northfield. On April 9, 1938 he married Gertrude Miller and returned to Harmony, working at his father’s creamery until 1957.

Later he purchased the Harmony Laundromat and Harmony Motel, converting the motel into the Hoiness Apartments. Full retirement came in 1979, when a previous hobby in woodworking became a true labor of love. Creating, sculpturing, and crafting original pieces became his trademark. His work including everything from a basic chopping block to complicated intricate Paraguayan Harps. Any spare hours were occupied with other activities including hunting, fishing, and especially training his best friend, Colonel, a standard poodle.

Hoiness served the community as a Volunteer Fireman for 31 years, several of which he spent as chief. He has been a lifelong member of Greenfield Lutheran Church, member of the Greenfield Masonic Lodge #289, Harmony City Council, and Harmony Lions Club.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years, Gert, two daughters: Phoebe (Rolf) Nelson of Brooklyn Center, Minn, and Sandee (John) Pates of Fort Myers, Fla, four grandchildren: Knute Nelson, Kristine (Andy) Mullmann, Erika Nelson, and Jason (Elena) Pates, two brothers: Merlin and Donald, and two sisters: Lillian Turner and Muriel Waage.
