Arvilla DeVries

Arvilla DeVries, a lifelong Preston area resident, died June 22, 2003 at Austin Medical Center in Austin.

Born Arvilla Cady on April 17, 1917, in Spring Valley, the daughter of Benton and Alma (Rudlong) Cady. She grew up in the Preston area and was a 1935 graduate of Preston High School. On Sept. 28, 1938, she married Elmer DeVries in Preston, where the couple made their home. She was a homemaker and worked at the Victory Cafe, the Five & Dime Store, Farmers and Merchants Bank and the DeVries Barbershop, where she also had a record store. She also worked at Northwest Aluminum and was a hostess at the Branding Iron restaurant until she retired at the age of 83. Her husband died in 1977. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and was a long-time member of the Crown Hill Cemetery Association.

Survivors include a son, Jon of Chicago; a daughter, Kay (Bob) Finney of Austin; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, Betty Nietz of Scottsdsale, Ariz., Donna (Dale) Bork of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Joan (Curtis) Krebsbach and Lois Fossey, both of Austin; three brothers, Carroll Cady of Bloomington, Minn., and Ivan (Carolyn) Cady and Earl (Mary) Cady, both of Rochester. She was preceded in death by a grandson and two brothers.

The funeral was held June 25, 2003 at the Christ Lutheran Church in Preston, with the Rev. Jennifer Graf officiating. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Preston. Thauwald Funeral Home in Preston was in charge of arrangements.
