Betterley - Melvin L.

Melvin L. Betterley, 94, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Reads Landing and Harmony, died June 20, 2004 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following a brief illness.

Born June 13, 1910, in Rock Elm, Wis., he graduated from Elmwood, Wis., High School, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1932 and received a master's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1939. On June 29, 1934, he married Alice Ostrom of Reads Landing in Minneapolis. From 1933 to 1943 he taught in Minnesota and Iowa high schools, including in Harmony. During World War II, he was a professor of engineering graphics in the Navy V12 program at Minot College in North Dakota. He later taught at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago before moving to Iowa City in 1952. He was a professor of engineering graphics in the University of Iowa College of Engineering for 26 years and published the textbooks "Sheet Metal Drafting" and "Basic Graphics for Engineers." In addition to teaching, he was head of the department of engineering graphics, assistant dean of engineering from 1965 to 1973 and director of engineering publications from 1973 until his retirement in 1978.

Survivors include his wife; and a son, Richard, of Boynton Beach, Fla. A son preceded him in death.

A graveside service for Melvin L. Betterley was June 25 in Riverview Cemetery in Wabasha, with the Rev. Mark Arbisi officiating.
