Long - Arlida M. Lee

Arlida M. Lee Long, 81, of Zamora, Calif., formerly of Rushford and Austin, died April 11, 2005 at her home.

Arlida Bakken was born Aug. 19, 1923, in Rushford. She graduated from Austin High School and trained as a nurse at St. Lucas School of Nursing in Faribault. She served in the Army during World War II, mainly in the Philippines. On April 6, 1947, she married James Long of Zamora. She was active in the Zamora 4-H as a leader and booster, and in the Mothers Club of Zamora Union School, and served on the local election board for many years. She assisted many well-baby and immunization clinics and the Elks blood bank, and, after surviving melanoma in 1963, she volunteered with oncology patients in Sacramento, Calif. She was a longtime member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, taught Sunday school, served on the consistory, and was involved with fund-raising efforts at Stollwood/St. Johns Retirement Village.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Janet (Stan) Levers of Woodland, Calif., and Barbara (David) Frey of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a son, David (Rachel) of Zamora; six grandchildren; four sisters, Evangeline (William) Cannell of Walkerton, Ind., Dorothy (Donald) Morgan of Medford, Minn., Elvira Bakken of Lake McQueeney, Texas, and Mildred Billie (Jack) Croll of Zamora; and four brothers, Allwyn (Shirley) Bakken and David (Karen) Bakken, both of Rochester, Everett Al (Pat) Bakken of Wykoff and the Rev. Donald (Avonne) of Cannon Falls. Two sisters preceded her in death.

A memorial service for Arlida M. Lee Long was April 16 at St. Johns United Church of Christ in Zamora, Calif.
