Payne - Alice E. Meyer

Alice E. Meyer Payne, 85, of Spring Valley, died May 28, 2005 while visiting at her grandsons home in Greenville, Wis.

Alice Calhoun was born June 13, 1919, in St. Paul to Howard and Frieda (Schmidt) Calhoun. She lived in Punxsutawney, Pa., with her family and started school there. In 1928, her family moved to Minnesota and settled near Fountain. She attended school in rural Fountain, completed grade school and graduated eighth grade in Lanesboro, then attended Wykoff High School through ninth grade. She then worked in the area baby-sitting and housekeeping. She married Walter A. Meyer on Aug. 1, 1940, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wykoff. They lived in Wykoff and owned and operated Meyer Feed Mill. Mr. Meyer died Nov. 6, 1952, after which she worked at Ozzies AG grocery store in Wykoff. In 1962, she moved to Rochester and worked at Waters Corp., and Neumans Craft Photography. On Nov. 28, 1970, she married the Rev. John H. Payne, then pastor of Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley. After his retirement, they moved to Hancock, Minn. A few years later, they moved back to Spring Valley. The Rev. Payne died Feb. 24, 1997. She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff until her second marriage, then was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley, where she belonged to the United Methodist Womens Club and Rachel Circle.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth Red (Betty) Meyer of Spring Valley; three daughters, Gloria (Samuel) Blakeslee, Judiene (Roger) Sanford and Sheryl (Ron) Strain, all of Spring Valley; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elsie Latuff of Hastings, Minn. She was preceded in death by a son, a grandson, a granddaughter, three brothers and one sister.

The funeral for Alice E. Meyer Payne June 2 at Faith United Methodist Church, with Dr. William Rowen officiating. Burial was in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Wykoff. Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.
