Mildred I. Redmond, 89, formerly of Lanesboro, died July 7, 2004 at Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.

Mildred I. Ruen was born on September 26, 1914 in Glenwood Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. She attended country schools and graduated from Decorah High School in 1933. She received a nursing degree from the Norwegian American Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, Ill. in 1938. She also attended YMCA College and Loyola University in Chicago for advanced training in Industrial Nursing. From 1943 to 1945, she served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps with a rank of Lieutenant. She was stationed at Treasure Island, San Francisco, Calif., where she worked with evaluation of the then new drug Penicillin. Later duty stations included military hospitals in Klamath Falls and Astoria, Ore. as well as Seattle, Wash. where she cared for many servicemen wounded in the Pacific campaign. After her discharge she received her certificate in cosmetology. She partnered with her sister in a hair salon for several years before returning to nursing in the Chicago area. She interrupted her career several times to return home to care for her parents. On December 31, 1946 she married Walter J. Redmond in Chicago where they resided until 1967 when they moved to Lanesboro to care for her parents. She continued nursing for several years as an employee of the Fillmore County Dept. of Public Health and the Harmony Hospital. Her husband died March 31, 1981. Mrs. Redmond was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary and other local organizations.

Survivors include a sister Leona Carlson of Mankato. She was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Ruen.

A memorial service for Mildred I. Redmond will be held at a later date at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lanesboro.
