Mattison - Gerhard I. O. ‘Gary’

Gerhard I. O. ‘Gary’ Mattison, 63, of Spring Valley, died July 20, 2004 at his home following a long illness with diabetes.

Born Dec. 12, 1940, in Racine, he graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1959 and served with the Army in intelligence from 1961 to 1963. In 1963, he attended Minneapolis Institute of Art for drawing. In 1964, he began working in manufacturing at IBM in Rochester, was educated and certified in IBM educational programs and moved up to a position in computer programming. On July 10, 1965, he married Barbara Merkel in Spring Valley where they made their home. Mr. Mattison worked for IBM until 1992 when he retired due to his disability. He was a member of American Legion Post 50 of Wabasha.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Michael (Vicki) of Rochester; two daughters, Michele (Chad) Pruter of Spring Valley and Melinda (Andy) Mattison Page of New Hope, Minn.; five grandchildren; his mother, Thelma (Hovda) Mattison of Grand Meadow; two brothers, John (Mary) of Wabasha and Bob (Yolanda) of New Mexico; and three sisters, Geri (Russ) Farnsworth of Lanesboro, Shirley (Dave) Bailey of Rochester and Chris (Ray) Deo of Spring Valley. His father preceded him in death.

The funeral for Gerhard I. O. “Gary” Mattison was July 24 at First English Lutheran Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. Robert Burmeister officiating. Burial was in the Spring Valley Cemetery. Hindt Funeral Home in Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.
