Gilma Evelyn Scheevel

Gilma Evelyn Scheevel, age 81, died on October 2, 2014, at Harmony Community Healthcare in Harmony Minn., after living 22 plus years with the disabilities associated with a massive stroke.

Funeral services were held at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, Minn. on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 1:30 p.m., with Pastor Betsy Dartt officiating and burial in Greenfield Lutheran Cemetery. Friends called on Tuesday from 12:30 until time of services at the church. Lindstrom Funeral Home assisted the family.

Gilma was born on May 13, 1933 to Gilman O. and Viola (Ole) Anderson in Spring Valley, Minn. She grew up in York Township, where her parents owned and operated a country store. Gilma graduated from Harmony High School in 1951 and married Myron D. Scheevel on December 27, 1952 at the Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony.

Gilma had a very colorful and eclectic work history. Above and beyond being a mother and an active farm wife, Gilma was secretary to the superintendent of schools, founded and operated the Villager Drive-Inn in Canton from 1962 to 1974, drove school bus for the Harmony School district for 25 years, co-founded and operated Amish Country Tours and co-founded and operated the Village Green retail shops from 1987 until her illness took her away from performing her duties in 1992. Gilma was known in the community as an enthusiastic person with a great entrepreneurial spirit. She served the Harmony Ambulance for eight years, was a member of the Rachel Circle at her church, and was a member of the Harmony Hospital Auxiliary.

Gilma is survived by her husband of 61 years, Myron; her three children, Kandis of Mound, Minn., Mark (Donna) Scheevel of Harmony, and Amy of Onalaska,Wis. Also surviving are her three grandchildren, Drew and Kari Scheevel and their son Liam, Derek Scheevel and Emily (Pederson), and Leah Scheevel.

Gilma was preceded in death by her parents, Gilman and Viola; her parents-in-law, Elmer and Marie Scheevel; a sister, Lucille (Gaylon) Richardson; and her grandson, Daniel Mark Scheevel.

Gilma was passionate about a lot of things in her life. Her commitment to family, friends, home, community and her church were top on the list, but the Minn. Twins and the Vikings, along with her businesses and volunteerism, were also high on
