Letter about Bullies Among Us?...

Tue, Sep 8th, 2015

To the Editor,

Those who attended the August 27, 2015 Houston County Planning Commission meeting witnessed a disturbing spectacle. There was a malicious oral attack on committee member Rich Schild by chairperson Dan Griffin. Fireworks erupted when Schild attempted to correct the minutes from the July 23, 2015 meeting regarding a misrepresentation of his motion.

The confrontation erupted when Griffin accused Schild of falsifying his original motion, which failed on a 4:2 vote.

Griffin instantly transformed from a reasonable meeting leader into an infuriated bully. His attitude and behavior was unprofessional, intimidating, and disrespectful. Griffin’s performance as the Planning Commission Chair was reprehensible! There is no place in our Houston County government for this behavior from an elected official, and certainly not from someone in an “appointed” position. His “job” is to run the meeting in a professional, objective manner, and extend courteous, respectful treatment to every Planning Commission member as well as the public in attendance.

Due to poor audio quality, the county recording couldn’t be used to resolve the conflict. A Houston County resident offered a recording of the July 23 meeting with better audio quality. Commission member Larry Hafner was the voice of reason and did the right thing when he recommended viewing the citizen’s recording to help resolve this issue. Bullies are not effective leaders!
