In response to “Corned Corn”...

To the Editor,

As cattlemen and cattlewomen from Fillmore County, we are concerned by the recent commentary article “Corned Corn” published on March 14, 2014 in the Fillmore County Journal which suggests that going “meatless” is somehow healthier for individuals—this is simply not true. Eating meatless isn’t a shortcut to eating healthy and may actually do more harm than good.

Despite the common misconception that was promoted in your article, most Americans are not over-consuming protein. While the Dietary Guidelines recommend 5.5 ounces from the Protein Foods Group daily for the average 2,000 calorie diet, which includes, 3.7 ounces daily of meat, poultry or eggs, adults are consuming just 1.7 ounces of beef a day. Many people do not realize the unintended consequences of eliminating high-quality animal protein, such as lean beef, from the diet and the serious impact it can have on their health. Luckily, there are more than 29 cuts of beef that meet government guidelines for lean, so it’s easy to “go lean with protein” and follow the U.S. Dietary Guidelines. Finding delicious, yet healthful solutions for your entire family are as close as your grocer’s meat case. On average, a 3-ounce serving of lean beef is only 154 calories and has less than 10 grams of total fat and 4.5 grams or less of saturated fat and less than 95 milligrams of cholesterol. Additionally, lean beef is an excellent source of six nutrients (protein, zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, niacin and selenium) and a good source of 4 nutrients (phosphorous, choline, iron and riboflavin). Further, a 3-ounce serving of lean beef provides 25 g (about half) of the Daily Value for protein, which is one of the most satisfying nutrients.

As members of the Fillmore County Cattlemen’s Association we have and continue to raise nutritious, wholesome and high-quality beef for consumption. Our county cattlemen and cattlewomen, as well as their families take great pride in feeding and contributing to the good health of millions of Americans—now and for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Joe Nelson

To the Editor, I am abundantly grateful to Dr. Van Gorp for his comprehensive article on “Sustainability”. “Infinite growth on a finite planet, is by definition, not sustainable.” As it is we have a government “of the few, by the few, fo .....

To the Editor, I read Mrs. Nyenhuis’ letter about health care and some red flags were very apparent to me. I found it hypocritical of her to talk about how well her knee is doing and how lucky she is to have her husband after his diabetic trauma .....

To the Editor, As I have tried to study silica sand mine issues in southeastern Minnesota, I have to say I am a bit disappointed in Minnesotans. It appears that our stance is one of “let’s do what we can to prevent silica sand mining in southea .....
