Letter about R-P school referendum

Mon, Sep 29th, 2014
Posted in Rushford Letter to the Editor

To the Editor,

The Vote Yes R-P Committee knows that there may be people out there who want to support this fall’s school referendum, but are afraid they won’t be able to handle a property tax increase. If you’re worried about the affordability of the referendum, we urge you to look into the programs outlined below.

Minnesota Property Tax Refund

If your adjusted gross income is less than $105,500, homestead and agricultural property owners can qualify for a refund of up to 80% of a property tax increase caused by the proposed referendum. It is intended to reduce tax burdens for homeowners with relatively low incomes and relatively high property tax burdens, and offers a sliding-scale refund based on your income and property tax burden, with a maximum refund of $2,580.

Special Property Tax Refund

If your property taxes increased by more than 12% and more than $100 from one year to the next, you may qualify for a state refund equal to a portion of the increase. There is no income limit for this refund.

Deductibility of Property Taxes

If you itemize deductions for federal income taxes, you may deduct all property taxes paid. Therefore, any increase in property taxes will reduce your income state and federal tax liability.

Senior Citizen Property Tax Deferral

If you are 65 or older and have a household income of $60,000 or less, you may be eligible to limit the maximum amount of property tax you pay to 30% of your total household income. This program also provides predictability because the amount of tax you pay will not change for as long as you participate in it.

To determine your eligibility for these programs, complete Minnesota tax form M1PR, available online at www.taxes.state.mn.us.

To the Editor, To answer the Sage of Lanesboro Stan Gudmundson’s far right revisionist view of World War Two would be an exercise in futility. The lies, innuendo, leaves one breathless. I suppose the good Colonel would have us allied with Der Fue .....
