Gundersen to offer flu shots beginning Oct. 19

Mon, Oct 19th, 2015
Posted in All Health & Wellness

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 36,000 flu-related deaths occur each year in the United States. During the 2014-2015 flu season, 145 of those flu-related deaths were children.

To help reduce the risk of getting the flu, Gundersen Health System will begin offering flu vaccines on Monday, Oct. 19.

Health experts at Gundersen recommend that anyone who wishes to reduce his or her chances of catching the flu should be vaccinated. It is especially important for people who are considered at high risk for problems with the flu to be vaccinated including:

· Children between 6 and 23 months of age

· Those age 65 and over

· Pregnant women in their second and third trimester

· People with health conditions such as heart or lung problems, kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, asthma, etc.

· Residents of long-term care facilities

· Healthcare workers

The flu season usually starts in November and can run as late as April. Most people who get the flu are sick for four to five days. But others, especially those with other health problems, may need to be hospitalized. Symptoms of the flu include:

· Fever

· Chills

· Cough

· Sore, aching muscles

In addition to getting the flu shot, you can also reduce your chances of getting the flu and other common viruses such as colds, by washing your hands and using hand sanitizer regularly. Also cough into your elbow not your hand; this will help prevent the spread of germs.

To schedule your appointment, contact your primary care provider or the Gundersen Clinic nearest you. For more information go to gundersenhealth.org/flu.
