Seasonal influenza vaccination clinics scheduled

Mon, Oct 11th, 2010
Posted in Health & Wellness

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently encourages everyone over the age of six months to get vaccinated for seasonal influenza as soon as vaccine becomes available in your community. For families with children under the age of six months, it is highly recommended that parents, caregivers, and siblings receive flu vaccinations in order to protect the infant. Other individuals encouraged to obtain seasonal flu vaccinations include: individuals over 50 years of age, pregnant women, anyone who cares for or personally has a long-term health condition or weakened immune system, and health care providers.

Thanks to grant funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, families with children enrolled in Fillmore County School Districts will be able to have their students vaccinated at their respective school for absolutely no cost. Families should watch for additional information from their school district regarding this great seasonal flu vaccine opportunity.

For 2010, Fillmore County Public Health (FCPH) will be hosting seasonal flu vaccination clinics for the public in a variety of new community locations. Initial clinics will be held in Room 108 of the Fillmore County Office Building located at 902 Houston Street NW, Preston, MN on the following dates:

• Monday, October 25, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM

• Tuesday, October 26, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM

• Wednesday, October 27, 2010 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

The 2010-2011 seasonal flu vaccination provides protection against the A/California/7/2009 (H1N) - like virus, A/Perth/16/2009 (H3N2) - like virus, and B/Brisbane/60/2008 - like virus and is available to anyone six months of age and older. The cost of the flu vaccination is $25.00 each. Adults with Medicare Part B or children under age 18 on MnCare or Medical Assistance can receive the flu vaccination free of charge if their insurance cards are presented at the clinic.

For more information regarding seasonal influenza, go to the Minnesota Department of Health website at http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/diseases/flu/index.html.
