Senator Al Franken Addressing World Alzheimer's Day in Minnesota

Posted in Health & Wellness

Minneapolis, MN - The Alzheimer's Association Minnesota-North Dakota commends Senator Al Franken for his support of World Alzheimer's Day, September 21, 2010. Senator Franken declared Alzheimer's Awareness day. For the more than 5 million people nationwide living with Alzheimer's, and the 97,760 living right here in Minnesota, this recognition and support is a significant step in the fight against the disease and offers great promise for someday having a world without Alzheimer's.

The numbers alone are staggering. A report released today estimated the worldwide costs of Alzheimer's and dementia are $604 billion just this year. But the numbers don't tell the full story. What are the costs here in Minnesota - both financially and emotionally - for the people living with Alzheimer's? Senator Franken will tell the Carol and Alan Shapiro's story from the floor to give the bigger picture.

"Senator Al Franken, a true Champion for families impacted by Alzheimer's disease, called on Congress to provide the funding needed to make real progress in the fight against the disease," said Jan Mueller, Field and Advocacy Director at the Alzheimer's Association Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter. "We are inspired by Senator Franken's commitment to provide help and hope to the 5.3 million Americans living with this devastating disease."

With an aging baby boomer population soon to be at the epicenter of an escalating Alzheimer crisis, the disease will become the country's biggest, broadest and most expensive problem - to individuals, families, and the healthcare system.

Muller continued, "The Alzheimer's Association commends Senator Franken and appreciates his depth of understanding American families as they confront the financial, medical and legal devastation of this disease."
